Suikoden: Tierkreis follows the same general design put in place by the franchise back on PSX, but it is a little different in a few point. And there are no traditional duel or war modes in this sekuel, with all the battles centered instead around your four (technically is five).

Suikoden: Tierkreis will combines a lot from its history and adding 108 characters, with around 20 or so of them being "support class" fighters, meaning that they won't appear in the roster as regular selectable fighters for the front and back rows, but instead used in unique ways during battle. From the way Konami described it, there are a few specific battles, you've got your four-man squad, but then will also get support characters as the story goes on. If you get a lead character, for example, and he has a little sister, or is royalty and has an over-ambitious guard with him, as a random example, that secondary character may be added as a support fighter.
